The Shining, brought to screen by the genius of Stanley Kubrick, is this adaptation of the Stephen King book by the same name. The movie has been called the most thrilling of all time and one of the most carefully thought out film ever. Many critics will agree that there is something special about this movie, something about the way it manages to enact an emotional response from the viewer. Kubrick uses many devices in the creation of these emotional responses and certainly one of the most important elements used to create suspense and the sense of surreality is his particular use of plot in The Shining. This essay will examine the movie’’s plot, looking at how it contributes to the creation of suspense in the shining.

The story is essentially about an uninspired writer, Jack Torrence who takes a job at the Overlook, an old hotel, as the winter caretaker. He then progresses into madness and attempts to kill his wife and son. Like the crazy, unbelievable sequence of events that make up the plot, so to, the timeline that the story follows seems to exist within very little order, jumping in a meaningful, yet sporadic manner, from, \”2 months later\”, to \”a few hours later\”, compressing progressively the audiences involvement and scope from the wide open, as in the title sequence of the mountains, through to the final detailed shots of the end. It is through these divisions that the plot is outlined.

The protagonist of the film is the little clairvoyant boy, Jack’’s son, Danny. It is mostly through his eyes that we see the story unfold. He is the wisest of the characters and one in whom we vest our interest and concern. It could be argued that Jack is the main character, or indeed one who displays many of the archetypal protagonist characteristics. In many ways the story revolves mostly around his degeneration into madness.

The antagonist is undoubtedly the house itself. We get the clear impression that Jack is merely acting out the wishes of the house. It has the sinister hidden agenda, the motives for which the audience is left open to interpret. Nonetheless, through the dubious ghosts the house drives Jack into raving lunacy and homicidal tendencies.

At the overlook, Jack is given the job, while back home the hypersensitive Danny has a premonition. He asks Tony, \”the little boy who lives in his mouth\” what’’s wrong with the hotel. Then he sees torrents of blood gushing out of some elevators, in a strikingly vivid, colourful shot, followed or preceding a shot of two young girls, ghosts? The murdered daughters of the mad caretaker? Kubrick adds a serious element of danger. This I feel serves as the turning point/climax of act one. The stage is now set and the characters must now deal with the unfolding body of act two.

The transition into act two takes place as we see the family on the road to the hotel. The conversation turns to the story of some pioneers who, trapped in the same mountain range, resort to cannibalism to survive. Again, a commentary on the inhumanity of humanity, as well as hinting toward the upcoming danger and violence.

At the overlook, they are shown around the mansion. Wendy and Danny meet with the head chef, Mr. Halloran. We learn from him that he and Danny share the gift of sight, the shining, also that the hotel is somewhat dangerous especially the ominous room 237, and that Danny should at all costs stay out of it.

Mr. Hallornan, senses the on goings at the overlook and decides to go up there. Meanwhile, in a great, truly disturbing scene, Wendy discovers her husband’’s writings; pages and pages of the repetition of the same sentence. She now knows absolutely the extent of her husband’’s madness. He finds her there and throws sarcastic remarks at her, in perhaps one of the funniest scenes in the movie.

In the end it is Mr Halloran who inadvertently saves the day. He arrives and distracts Jack only to become a corpse himself. Jack peruses his son into the maze and in a terrifying chase sequence, shot with the same unique very engaging steadicam technique in what comprises the pinnacle of the climax. Jack meets an icy grave and Wendy and Danny escape in the ice-mobile.

This movie definitely needs a couple of watching’’s to fully be appreciated. I feel there were many subtleties in its plot, which make it the engaging, and terrifying story it is. Kubrik uses visions to add the element of suspense. He portrays the house as an ominous almost omnipotent entity on its own. I personally found Jacks slip into madness a bit unbelievable. Perhaps it was to rapid, or through insufficient dialogue we were not given enough to go on to accept his rapid degeneration. I found the plot distinctions in this story rather vague and difficult to spot. Certainly this movie deviates from many of the norms. From the length of the shots, to the nature of the shots. Nonetheless a film with a successful difference and the sporadic nature of the plot does indeed contribute to the success of the film.

At the beginning of the film Michael Corleone returns from war to a doubtful future and attends a family wedding. It becomes evident from the very beginning that Michael does not want to follow the steps of his family and embark on a Mafioso lifestyle. We are given the feeling that Don Vito Corleone respects his son’’s will not to pursue such a lifestyle even though each of his other sons are predominantly involved in the family \”business\” and for this reason alone it can be construed that he is Don Vito’’s beloved son and the one in which he takes the most interest. Despite Michaels apparent wishes not to become occupied with the family \”business\” it is obvious that he cannot ignore his feelings of loyalty and devotion to them or his natural ability to take a role of responsibility and mantle within the family.

Don Vito Corleone is an aging godfather/patriarch who is the head of the Corleone crime family in the New York boroughs. The opening of the film is located at a family wedding, the one in which we see Michael return after the war, and in this scene we see just how far the Dons power extends; from a regular worker in the neighbourhood, to an immensely popular and famous singer, to his friends in politics, all are links of his who are ready to ask favours of him due to his high stature and ability to provide gangland justice in return for them to offer their respect to him and repay such favours. As the film progresses it becomes evident that times are changing, and to many of the younger people working in the crime business, Don Corleone’’s ideas are becoming obsolete. The Don believes the new trend in the business of dealing and supplying drugs is dangerous and above all extremely immoral compared to his other business interests. He also for sees that families dealing with drugs would eventually end up self-destroying and that drugs are in a completely different league to his other interests and deals involving alcohol and gambling.

The baptism scene near the end of \”The Godfather\” comes because of Vitos death and is extremely relevant in portraying and confirming how embroiled Michael has become and it concludes his transformation from that of the youngest son wanting nothing to do with the family lifestyle to the ruthless head of the crime family he has become, a fate he secretly despised previously. The scene is highly significant and climatic because it employs a number of techniques that make it so dramatic. The scene is also so significant and climatic as a number of plot elements are resolved. During the scene cross-cut editing is used intensively to emphasize simultaneous events in a way that is not seen anywhere else in the film.

As Michael declares his faith, cross cutting continues and we witness the assassins draw ever closer to their victims. During this entire scene the sound of what is going on in the ceremony is played over all cross cuts and this includes the sound of the baby crying, perhaps symbolic of the imminent danger that is drawing close to the planned victims viewed in the cross cuts. The priest then asks Michael \”Do you renounce Satan\” as he replies \”I Do\” the scene cross cuts to the first murder where Clemenza kills two people in the lift. The dialogue between Michael and the Priest continues throughout the sequence while cutting back and forth between close-ups of Michael, and then people being killed. Michaels reaction is very important here as he knows what is going on elsewhere in the city on his behalf and even with this knowledge his face remains emotionless and blank showing he feels no kind of sorrow for what is going on and we now establish all his values have been lost to the lifestyle he has become hardened to. In one cross cut shot a man falls down a flight of stairs after being shot, perhaps symbolising the downfall of the power shared by the other families and the turn over of power and control to Michael.

During the course of the film Michael degenerates from an ashamed member of a notorious crime family he wants nothing to do with in a business sense to a ruthless, cold blooded and emotionless head of the family he was once so ashamed of and reluctant to mix with. By the end of the Baptism scene Michaels complete transformation has been concluded and the young Michael first seen at the beginning of the film is a distant memory by the time he has been engulfed by power and following his family’’s values despite the vast amounts of corruption and dishonesty that has come with following such values that in the first instance of the film he would not have considered being involved or associated with.

In my opinion, the easy part of Internet Marketing is building a website. Build a site that looks good, contains useful content, and is attractively and logically laid out and you”re in the money, right?

Do you want to create money-making new inventions? Not me. I just like to dream them up. Here are some of the new ideas I would love to see created in reality. I hope a reader or two will do something with them.

New Inventions For Outdoors

Free-standing tents without poles: The idea here is to have two inflatable sleeves that criss-cross over the top of a dome-style tent. Perhaps the rigidity would be insufficient for windy nights, but it’’s worth a try. Make them inflatable from inside, and you could quickly crawl inside and out of the rain to inflate it.

Rail-runner bicycle attachment: This is a new invention I want to try, but one that will not be popular with the railroad companies. Wouldn”t it be great to be able to bike along train tracks? They go many places that roads don”t go. The idea here is a device that holds the bicycle wheels on the track as you pedal along. Easy removal would be necessary, of course, for the occasional passing of a train.

Kites inflated with helium: If its been done, I haven”t seen them yet. With some lift from the helium, these kites could be flown in any amount of wind. Designed right, they would still fly something like a kite, and with more maneuverability if designed like a stunt kite, with two strings. The first prototype might be a kite with a small helium balloon attached. If somebody makes this, I”ll buy one.

Other New Inventions

Disposable t-shirts: Dollar stores have t-shirts on the shelves, so we know they”re getting cheap. Why not invented a line of shirts that are low-quality, but good enough, and cost very little to manufacture? Sell them in boxes of 12, as \”disposable clothing.\” Where’’s the market? Those who want less laundry to do on long trips, or those who want to have some cheap things to wear while doing dirty jobs.

Fast-food tube: These could be like the tubes at bank drive-throughs, but they would have to stay level for the sake of the drinks. Using these, one slow person won”t hold up the whole line at the drive-through, because there can be several lines. The customers send money in through this conveyor system, and get food back the same way. Just pull up to whichever lane is empty. I”m waiting to see this invention.

Magnetic painting kits: This new novelty invention would consist of a flat \”canvas\” of magnetic material (steel?), and an assortment of many colors of iron dust or small shavings. Just apply the metal dust carefully to create any \”painting\” you can imagine. It would be something like a Buddhist sand mandala, but slightly more permanent. Spray the finished painting with a \”fixer,\” and you could even hang it on the wall.

Invisible walls: This is a new invention that would be just plain fun. Make a wall with properly placed cameras, using the other side of the wall was the projection screen for these cameras, and the effect would be that of looking right into the other room – an invisible wall. I”m not sure about the practical applications, but an \”invisible ceiling\” would provide a nice view at night.

Magnetic signs for windows: Thousands of businesses use large magnetic signs for their vehicles, with their company name and logo on them. Of course these can only be used on metallic surfaces. To stick to car or building windows, they need a similar flat magnet or steel mesh material that is placed on the other side of the glass, to hold them in place. This may be one of those \”unpatentable\” ideas, but the first to trademark a catchy name and market them widely might do well with new inventions like these.
